Being a complete person doesn't have to be hard - Rumer Godden, James Altucher, and Vishen Lakhani

Rumer Godden wrote, "There is an Indian proverb that says that everyone is a house with four rooms, a physical, a mental, an emotional, and a spiritual. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time but unless we go into every room every day, even if only to keep it aired, we are not a complete person."

Recently I took an inventory of my daily actions to see if I was spending time in every room. I had difficulty deciding which room some of my activities fell into, many could have been in 2, 3, even all four.

As is often the case, I found advice from James Altucher which is made it very simple. In a summary written Adam Chudy, Altucher talks about his daily practices in four areas. He doesn't call them four rooms specifically, but Altucher's areas line up exactly with Godden's rooms.

From the Choose Yourself Guide to Wealth book review by Adam Chudy, here are Altucher's areas of daily practice:

  • physical
    • sleep enough
    • eat well
    • exercise
  • emotional
    • be around people who love and support you
    • ignore everybody else
  • mental
    • write down 10 ideas
    • read a lot
  • spiritual
    • don't complain
    • be grateful
If a person did just these nine simple things everyday, they'd have a pretty good life. Easier said, than done. Notice, there's no mention of income or possessions, just experiences, activities, and avoidance's.

Altucher himself goes into more detail with his own post, How to be the luckiest guy on the planet in 4 easy steps. His list includes suggestions on what to do if you can't come up with 10 ideas and surprising ways to be spiritual:
  • Pray, even if it's to the chair in front of you. Prayer means being thankful and not taking all the credit.
  • Forgiveness. Learning this has been one of the most powerful lessons of my life. Remember, forgiveness starts with forgiving yourself. You can't move forward in life if you're fixated on the past, even your own mistakes.
  • Studying. You would think studying would be in the mental list but Altucher points out that studying any spiritual text tends to make a person feel good.
Vishen Lakhani from MindValley has a short 20 minute meditation exercise which includes forgiveness. This is a good starter if you're new to forgiveness as a practice.
